- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
- 2 cups light brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup

1. Preparing the Ingredients
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 250°F (120°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat for easy cleanup.
- Prepare the Crispix: Pour the Crispix cereal into a large mixing bowl. If you are adding nuts, mix them in with the cereal.
2. Making the Caramel Sauce
- Melt the Butter: In a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter.
- Add Brown Sugar and Corn Syrup: Once the butter is melted, add the light brown sugar and light corn syrup. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a boil.
- Boil the Mixture: Allow the mixture to boil for 5 minutes without stirring. This step is crucial to ensure the caramel sets properly and coats the cereal evenly.
- Add Baking Soda and Vanilla: Remove the saucepan from heat and quickly stir in the salt, baking soda, and vanilla extract. The mixture will bubble up and become frothy. This is normal and indicates that the caramel is ready.
3. Coating the Crispix
- Pour the Caramel: Carefully pour the hot caramel mixture over the Crispix cereal in the large mixing bowl. Use a spatula to gently toss and coat the cereal evenly with the caramel. Be thorough to ensure every piece is well-coated.
- Spread on Baking Sheet: Spread the caramel-coated Crispix in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. If you are adding mini marshmallows or chocolate chips, you can sprinkle them over the top at this stage.
