Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Pan
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease an 8-inch round cake pan or 9×9 square pan with oil or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
2. Prepare the Dry Ingredients
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Stir the dry ingredients with a whisk to ensure everything is well combined and to eliminate any lumps.
3. Combine the Wet Ingredients
- In a separate bowl, mix the milk, vegetable oil, vinegar, and vanilla extract.
- Stir until all the wet ingredients are thoroughly combined. The vinegar will help the cake rise, so don’t skip this step!
4. Mix the Batter
- Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Use a whisk or a spatula to mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the cake dense.
- Gradually add the boiling water to the batter. This will make the batter thin, but don’t worry—this step ensures a moist, fluffy texture once baked.
5. Bake the Cake
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, spreading it evenly.
- Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
